This permanent exhibition charting the history of the castle's construction was opened during the 1994 Regional Horticultural Show in the medieval banquet hall in Schloß Neuhaus, former residence of Paderborn's Prince-Bishops.
Different sections of the exhibition provide the visitor with a vivid overview of the many phases of construction, beginning from the early building work in the thirteenth century and covering the many subsequent changes and improvements up to the end of the nineteenth century. There are further sections describing the period from 1967 when the castle was used as a comprehensive school and the restoration of the castle which took place between 1968 and 1994.
Other themes of the exhibition include the early and late Weser Renaissance period and the way in which these architectural styles influenced the castle's construction, as well as the effect of the Baroque period in the eighteenth century during the reign of Prince-Bishop Clemens August of Bavaria.
Haus Braunschweig was the first part of the castle built in the style typical of the Weser Renaissance and is now home to the only remaining rooms originally used by the Prince-Bishops. Here the visitor can view a number of apartments, including the royal dining-hall and royal cabinet room.
