In December 2002, the museums in the Royal Stables were enhanced by the addition of the Nachtmann collection of glassware and ceramics. It is well known that many museums rely primarily on private collections and this is certainly true of the Historical Museum, first opened to the public during the Regional Horticultural Show in 1994. The Nachtmann collection contains numerous artefacts recovered during the excavation of the castle moat, painstakingly documented by Hans Joachim Nachtmann over many years. In the absence of written records from this period these artefacts are of great cultural and historical importance and form an integral part of the museum's permanent collection.
