City Art Gallery Am Abdinghof
Städtische Galerie Am Abdinghof
The gallery is home to an impressive collection of twentieth century art, with nearly 100 works by Ella Bergmann-Michel and Robert Michel forming part of the main display. The couple number among the most accomplished of modern artists and are considered by experts as "pioneers of collageÂ?. Their works, comprised of collages, drawings, graphic reproductions and paintings, are based on the artistic principles of Dadaism and Constructivism and are also influenced by the Bauhaus School and the Futurist and Surrealist movements.
The Paderborn painter Willy Lucas (1884-1918) bequeathed extensive works to the gallery, which have only recently been recognised as an important and independent contribution to late impressionism. His land and cityscapes bear testament to his intense relationship with the principles of French impressionism, experienced at first-hand during his travels through France.
Works by important members of the famous Expressionist group of artists 'The Brücke' are the focus of the collection "Expressionist GraphicsÂ?. Works by Ernst-Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, Max Pechstein and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff are all exhibited, as well as Max Beckmann, Lovis Corinth, Otto Dix, Käthe Kollwitz and artists from the Dresden Secession Group. The gallery also exhibits a large collection of drawings by the artist Wilfried Hagebölling, considered to be an important contemporary sculptor.
Various different exhibitions are regularly held in the gallery's new extension, concentrating mainly on international art from 1945 to the present day. Other events such as lectures, talks by artists, music and video projects complement the gallery's programme making an important contribution to the city's cultural scene.
