The Cathedral's Diocesan museum was built between 1968-75, based on the design of Professor Gottfried Böhm of Cologne. The museum is home to an extensive collection of sacred art dating from the tenth to the twentieth centuries and features some of the most important German artworks in addition to pieces of international standing. The collection contains some 6000 exhibits, around 1,000 of which are on display in the newly designed show rooms which were built between 1991 and 1993.
The museum frequently holds exhibitions based on important themes from the field of Christian art and culture. It also offers a varied educational programme (guided tours, courses, presentations) which aims to introduce the general public to this increasingly unfamiliar subject area.
